"This is a Painting-Study by New York based figurative artist Leo Fuentes. The painting technique is oil on canvas, dimensions 52"x42" created in 2018 after the painting by Philadelphia artist Thomas Eakins, 1844-1916. The original painting "Dr. Samuel Gross Clinic" is an oil on canvas 8x6 feet painted in 1875 for the Philadelphia's 1876 Centennial Exhibition. The original is in the collection of the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

The painting depicts Dr. Samuel Gross performing, with other known doctors and medical students, a new surgical procedure
Dr. Gross had developed to treat bone infections. The figure on the right edge of the center of the painting shows a self-portrait of artist Thomas Eakins drawing during the surgery. Eakins studied anatomy under the direction of Dr. Samuel Gross. The female figure on the left is the mother of the young patient. The event takes place at the Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia. The painting is not an attempt to make a copy but rather a study to allow for some personal approaches in contemporary painting.
